Like so many I knew the name, I'd seen some of the movies and was aware of the suspicious circumstances surrounding her death, but beyond that I knew very little about Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe. But then I was handed "The Assassination of Marilyn Monroe" by Donald H. Wolfe to read and by the time I finished the enjoyable book I knew so much about the star, her humble start in life through to her rise as a pin up and icon and a great detail about the various conspiracies surrounding her sudden death.
"The Assassination of Marilyn Monroe" starts with Marilyn Monroe's death and the events surrounding it such as the time of calls to the hospital, where she was found and so on, in a sort of sleuth sort of way, painting a very clear picture of the events immediately surrounding her death and suggested suicide. What follows through out the book is an examination of all the evidence, highlighting where accounts and evidence contradicts each other leading to the continued speculation as to what really happened. Some of the more fascinating elements to Wolfe's investigation were that Bobby Kennedy had been a visitor not long before she dies and her death wasn't actually reported immediately.
What is also interesting is that having given us a look at all the evidence and shown that some of it was rather dubious Wolfe then states what theory he believes is to be the truth and provides solid reasoning as to why he believes it to be the case even though some might say it's just another conspiracy theory.
Alongside Wolfe's investigative look at the death of Marilyn he also delivers quite a thorough biographical look at the life of the star. In fact "The Assassination of Marilyn Monroe" is a thoroughly decent biography covering all the expected elements from her birth to an unmarried mother through to be discovered and becoming both an actress and a pin up. And there is almost a personal side to this biographical look at Marilyn's life as it is filled with snippets of interviews which the star gave during her short time as a star.
And as you would expect from a book which discusses one of Hollywood's biggest stars there is plenty of name dropping from the various relationships which Marilyn had as well as professional relationships on set with other actors.
As such "The Assassination of Marilyn Monroe" is a surprisingly rounded book which on one hand is a very personal biography, the next it has all the gloss and name dropping you want from a book on a Hollywood icon and finally it has the investigative side as Wolfe sets about uncovering the truth about her supposed suicide. It's a fascinating read which is not only a must for fans of Marilyn Monroe but is perfect for those who are only aware of Marilyn by name.
