Yesterday afternoon I met Emma and Josh in our walk home in Manhattan Beach for a movie/dinner so we could enjoy cinematic entertainment together and then talk about their recent holiday dinner. The film that everyone came to see this weekend was Noah so we decided to see for ourselves. Despite criticism from others, I could not help but feel curious to see Noah , mainly due to how much I work by Darren Aronofsky. To be honest, I felt that Noah was not the strongest of Aronofskyfilm (much less), but not hated, necessarily. There were things I didn't like but for the most part felt that it was very entertaining. Nearly everyone knows the story of Noah and his Ark, but through the lens of Darren Aronofsky, the story turned out a little different from the story we all know.
Normally when someone deals with a story like this, an actual biblical epic, usually there are factions of people who for various reasons they they will hear the film. If not memory, the history of Noah only takes a few verses in the Bible so to fit a 2 hour film, some freedom should take with history. Aronofsky Noah is quite faithful to the story in the Bible... Noah Gets a vision of the destruction of the world, builds an Ark, load with 2 of almost all kinds of animals from the Earth, rides the storm and repopulates the world once he has said and done and then a rainbow:
There are things that are added to that I guess I understand (from an entertainment perspective) but I don't know if I loved it. The fallen angels become observers called giant rock monsters was something new that has been added to the story. Honestly, no I hated the concept, but did not love you the delivery. If I remember from my years in Sunday school, I thought that the fallen angels were responsible for having babies with humans who grew up in abominable giants... and that was part of the reason that God decided to destroy life on Earth to start over again. I do not know the angels fallen making good and return to heaven makes sense, especially for so vindictive as God is depicted in the old testament of the Bible. But, it's a movie, right? The big final fight scene in the Ark was a purpose much time and fully released on film, which had a lot to swallow. If I were a person who believed the story in the Bible as absolute truth, I could see how it could be unhappy with the artistic license used in Noah. As a normal, looking for an entertaining film night old movie goer, I wasn't totally disappointed... but it did not surprise anyone. Darren Aronofsky has made some of my favorite movies of all time. Noah is definitely not one of them. I think that I have a hard time understanding why it was so important for him to tell this story. What forced it to do so? I have heard that there is a heavy environmental perspective to history but, personally, I don't see much of it. Vegetarianism was obvious but is there are people in the arms? I didn't see a clear message from Aronofsky on why they wanted to tell their version of the story of Noah . It wasn't as demanding for the text was not too far to resist as a film with a solid message. I went out with the thought of theatre, why? But not in the existential sense, in the way that seemed to leave me with no real feelings about the film. That said, I liked the film enough to be happy that I saw him. I know that some of you have already commented that he has seen the movie and you didn't, someone else? Does anyone have strong positive feelings about the film?
Tonight, I've been invited to a screening of Captain America: The Winter Soldier so I'm very excited about that. Apart from that, it should be a normal Monday. Happy new week, all!
