Earlier this week the series finale of the long-running CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother aired and left a great many fans angry and upset with how the 9 season story of HIMYM came to a close. In response, an industrious fan created an alternate ending that was met with great appreciation by pretty much everyone who saw it (the video has since been taken offline). Today we learn that the DVD box set for the HIMYM series will include an alternate ending, according to series creator Carter Bays (“Alt #himym ending will be on s9 DVD and also in the series box set”). It’s not known if the alternate ending that will appear on the DVD box set will be similar to the fan made video that made the rounds this week but a different ending than the one that was aired on the show is deffo on the way.

So anyway, here’s a bit of news: 16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings. We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series. We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too. We’re going to include that version on the Complete Series DVD as an alternate finale to How I Met Your Mother.
This makes total sense. The producers are able to have their cake and eat it, too. They aired the ending they wanted to air and then will have the opportunity to please all the fans they pissed off by giving them another ending (that will likely please fans). AND they’ll make lots of money doing so. I’m hopeful that the identity of Barney‘s babymama #31 will be revealed in the DVD box set extras. She should’ve been featured in the finale episode. Hopefully producers will do right by her, thereby redeeming Barney a little bit in the process, by featuring her in the DVD box set. If producers are smart, they’ll give fans the ending to How I Met Your Mother that they really wanted all along … a happy ending with the mother.
