In sad and somewhat surprising break up news, we learn today that Gwyneth Paltrow and husband Chris Martin have decided to end their 11 year marriage in what they are referring to as an “conscious uncoupling”. Gwyneth posted a message on her official GOOP website that explains to the world that she and Chris have decided to separate after “working hard” for over a year at salvaging their relationship. While their marriage is ending, she says, the couple are now “closer than … ever”. HMMM. I guess sometimes the best thing for a couple that loves one another is to break up. It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate. We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been. We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time. We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.

Granted, I don’t really follow Gwyneth and Chris very closely, this break-up seems to be coming out of nowhere. I guess it’s true that the couple aren’t ever really seen together anymore but I attributed that to the fact that they are a fiercely private couple who aren’t really fond of media attention. It sounds, tho, that they have taken great pains to try and salvage their marriage and have decided that what is best for them is to go their separate ways. My heart goes out to their children Apple Blythe and Moses Bruce. I’m sure it won’t be easy for them to see their parents “uncouple and coparent” from here on out. I wish the entire family all the luck in the world.
